    If my memory serves me correctly, you need a *real* null-modem
cable to talk to these beasts as they expect the modem-control bits
to work (e.g. DTR, and RTS/CTS).

    Do the lights on the front work?  Those go through quite a bit
before anything appears on the terminal.
