[rescue] Cut binding off

Anybody have a "good" way to do this?
I have lots of old manuals, book, courses, etc I'd like to scan.
A while back I took a couple old Sun course books to the ex-kinkos - wanted to run it through their hydraulic paper ram cutter etc - they gave me a hard time about it being copy written etc.
Was thinking about some type of compression/vise (home-made) etc so that I could just run a circular saw with a fine blade across it etc.
