After responding to this thread earlier, I finally decided to ask on the
OpenSolaris.org forums.

Apparently, the big magic is to run "pkg install slim_install". This
installs everything that would be installed from the Solaris 11 Express
LiveCD. It fixed the issues I had with a partially installed gnome.

As for Xorg, I'm a bit screwed in that Oracle EOL'd support for the mach64
fb of the U5 in Solaris 11 Express. The official response is that I should
run Solaris 10 (which includes the older Xsun server) or just go with a
headless solution (Xvnc from gdm, XDMCP, etc.)

 I'm actually considering trying to load *just enough* of Xsun from Sol 10
on top of 11 to try and get X working that way.
