Microsoft is aware of this problem for their general certifications and is
trying to introduce changes. It's harder than you might think. For their
higher-end certs (MCM) there's a hands-on lab component that so far does a
really good job of separating folks with lab experience from folks with
real-world skills. That was the most grueling test I've taken to date, and the
most satisfying to pass.
