Is it really needed? Just about every USB mouse I see in the stores,
comes with a PS/2 adapter. Well, not every, but enough to make them still
easy to find.

A PS/2 mouse port is a serial port, similar in design to RS-232, so
a voltage converter chip would probably be enough. 

The driver PS/2 for X Windows has been around for a long time, it probably
could be back-ported to the version running on the older Sun machines
but would take weeks to compile :-( I once compiled all of X-11R6 on
a 25mHz SPARC and it took a week.

The biggest problem I see is the serial ports handling the speed, the
mice AFAIK don't use flow control and weren't the SUN/2 era mice
1200 bps?
