Windows for this particular set of symptoms, but I've seen random
flakiness under Linux as well.  I haven't tried a USB serial adapter
under Mac so I can't speak for that.  I agree that it's a software
issue - my only point is that actually using a USB adapter for serial
is more problematic than using a regular serial port, at least IME
(and, apparently, Andrew's).
