sure it wasn't a buick 455?  back then all the divisions had their own
engine lines and only shared the chevy 6 as a base engine.  olds and
poncho also had 455s, caddy had a 472.  none of them share parts.

chevy needed a big engine in the early '60s to compete with the ford
427 and mopar 426.  they used the truck 409 while they designed up the
'mark iv' big block, which came out as a 396 iirc in '65.

at gm, chevy, buick, and olds all sold their engines for marine use,
afaik all through 3rd parties who handled most of the marine
conversion.
