You are correct - 36 bit memory is required on those boxes.  I might  
even have some of the size in question but I can't swear to it.

As for the NVRAM I've had to replace those (0) in almost every sun4c  
machine I've ever owned so it's quite likely that it'd dying.

(0) I didn't really replace them I just reprogrammed them after a  
dremel and battery adding session.
