[rescue] Non-rescue post: basic (?) rcp error

I have Googled, RTFM and sacrificed goats, nothing has helped so far.
Want to rcp on private gigabit network from hostA to hostB

Two boxes are hostA and hostB
On the private network, they are hostA.gig and hostB.gig

Note: rcp is not normally allowed on the public network: only temporary
as I troubleshoot.

hostA: $ rcp file hostB:/path
works.

hostA: $ rcp file hostB.gig:/path
doesn't. "Protocol error, hostB.gig closed connection"

in.rlogind perms are good. hostB not blocking rsh.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
