As far as I know, it's to prevent the weight of the
monitor from breaking the case. Especially those Sun
monitors. We run an Ultra 10 (same case style) on it's
side at work, and it's got an uptime of over a year. I
don't see how running the box sideways could hurt it -
there aren't any air vents on the sides. It just might
be harder to use the CD drive. YMMV.
