It's probably been 15 years since I looked at the schematic for an Amiga,
but couldn't they be easily converted from NTSC to PAL? If that is the
case, wouldn't it be better to set one up as PAL, figure out how to
get a monitor working on it and scrounge all of that wonderful PAL
Amiga software I keep hearing about?

PAL or NTSC/PAL TV sets are not things you buy at the mall in the U.S.
(they are here), but you should be able to find one. I know the Hitachi
one we bought last year for our kids was available in the U.S.
