" POSIX <> Unix,

a mostly - but i'll concede not completely - semantic difference.

" and WinNT and all it's decendents were/are POSIX-compliant, enabling the federal government to purchase these "Open" systems based on WinNT architecture... ;^)
"
" Microsoft has tools that can be loaded on top of WinNT-bsed systems to make them "Unix-like" (SFU, and now, SFU)[0]

" [0] First there was Software for Unix, now there is Subsystem for Unix ;^) See:

the 'software' suite was crap and intended solely to meet govt 'open
system' definition, not for actual use. the subsystem was developed by
interix to be a posix-compliant layer over the nt microkernel in place
of the ms win32 layer. it's generally considered to be more stable
than win32 also. i'm a little surprised ms didn't kill it after they
bought interix.

i recall from my att-bl days that the ksh88 src had a POSIX
compile-time flag, and at least in 10.20, hpux's posix sh was ksh88
compiled with the flag set.
