I can assure you there is no font-handling code whatsoever in the
window manager I run[0], but you'll notice that the fonts are
silky-smooth.

XRENDER, Xft, and fontconfig have little or nothing to do with either
GNOME or KDE.  Like so many things, they run much better without them.
