sformat(8) has an extensive pattern read / write verify test. It writes
a pattern to the entire disk, reads it back, checks if it is correct,
does bad block testing, ... A complete run consists of 12 read / write
cycles with different patterns. I think you can be sure all old data is
/dev/null-ed after 12 writes. Nice side effect of sformat(8): It also
checks the fitness of your disks.
