Could you up the speed with a faster SCSI controller? If you change the controller it should only take a jumper cable to get the SCA backplane on the new controller, and if it is bootable then you're good to go...
(I'm installing Solaris 10 on an Ultra 5 at the moment with a 270 MHz CPU, 512 Meg RAM, and a Sun original 4.3 Gig IDE HD... It's taking quite a while...)
