No, but thanks for the idea, I so far hadn't considered that the 
kernel images might have been damaged.

But since my previous mail the errors progressed and I could not boot 
any kernel successfully at all. I figured it must be hardware fault
(mainboard, ram, cpu etc). Reseating cache simm seems to have helped and 
now every kernel boots fine again.
