Thanks, I'll try that.  I typically use (virgin) newsprint for drying
*glass* (though, thankfully, have not risked scratching any
coatings on the CRTs with tht approach)

Yes.  In my case, the need to clean arises from airborn dust
(during swamp cooler season) *or* having to transport/move the
monitor for some reason -- at which time the glass always
ends up leaning on my chest -- which invariably leaves
smudges *someplace*  :-(
