Actually, there *are* a few houses with basements.

A friend has one.

During one of the hurricanes the power went out, thus taking with it the
sump pump. He said the water was over the top of the fuse box (and
furnace, and hot water heater).

Groan. I think I'd have to have a backup, either generator or bicycle.
