IDE stands for "Integrated Drive Electronics".

IDE is cheaper because it grew up in the PC world and the bus was
originally -very- similar to the PC/AT bus (ie: 16-bit ISA), therefore
requiring little in the way of communications hardware on the bus.

They moved all the bus abstraction stuff onto the drive itself, hence
the name.  This meant that the controllers were cheaper, so everyone
started using IDE controllers on PCs, which drove up the demand for
drives, which made the drives cheaper because they could be produced and
sold in greater quantities.
