A good friend of mine posted the following observant commentary:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/technoshaman/749852.html
"It is fitting that a man that inspired so many to engineering passes on
the anniversary of one of the finest feats of engineering the world has
yet known - and that that event should involve space. It is ironic that
the man whose character gave the Klingons so much tribble designed the
basis of their language for them... while he played an engineer on the
screen, behind the scenes he was quite the linguist, coming up with not
only the basis for Klingon but for Vulcan as well, and playing most of
the guest roles in the animated version of his series. He was also a
soldier, losing a finger on D-Day's Juno Beach with the Royal Canadian
Artillery, and a writer, helping S.M. Stirling on three novels."
