The Mbus modules were usually interchangeable with other Mbus systems.
Almost any Mbus module would work in any system that had Mbus.  

SGI never did anything like that and as a result SGIs had to be thrown
away after a few years and replaced with new ones in order to get the
fastest setup.  This was not lost on sysadmins and the CFOs they had
to keep happy.
