The ARTIC is a flexible serial communication interface ("a real time
interface coprocessor") It gives you a user-programmable, real-time,
multitasking environment, on top of which you can implement custom or
proprietary protocols on top of frame relay (E1, T1), v.35, x.25,
RS-232, RS-422, etc. depending on which interface card the processor
card is fitted with. Or you can stick with the "standard" protocols
and save yourself some work.

If it does ESCON I am not aware of it. I'm nearly positive it doesn't.
