Your memory of exchange rates could do with a bit of refreshing. During
the period we're talking about (early 1980's), the US dollar would buy
between 0.41-0.65 UKP (the historical high in 1985 was when $1=UKP0.87).
Apple was quite entitled to sell a $1,000 computer in the UK for
UKP1,000; we were entitled to fall about laughing.
