I don't know, but I'm very interested in what you find out!

I read somewhere that the stuff in the NVRAM hardware error log get copied
to the SYSLOG once the system starts up, but I don't recall seeing anything
about having to clear the hardware log or anything like that.

There's an owner's manual at
www.sgi.com/products/legacy/pdf/challenge_owners_guide.pdf, but I don't see
anything that directly refers to the problem you're having.
