I don't trust city (or building) power at all.

About nine months ago, it started as a flickering of the lights, and
then after about a week, turned into my desktop UPS / surge protector
going "snnnarrgggghhhHHHHKK! *CLICK*" every thirty seconds or so.

When we finally called an electrician out, it was determined that the
last remaining piece of aluminum wiring in the house (everything else
had been replaced), the big run between the outside breaker box and the
"internal" breaker box in the garage, was loose.

Couple of turns with an insulated screwdriver, and everything was okay.
However, because I didnt like the arced-over look and burnt smell in
our existing internal breaker panel, I had the entire thing replaced a
week later.

I make my living with my computers, and other than my house, TV, and
truck, my dual-G4 Mac is the most valuable thing I own.  Couple hundred
bucks here and there for guaranteed protection is cheap compared with
having to come up with $2K for a new computer..
