Cant help on patch management, but on package, might want to look into:

You can set up your own repository and packages or use : 
http://www.blastwave.org/

it uses wget, pkgadd et al behind the script. Been using it for over a 
year and I must say it works very well. Combine that with jumpstart and 
it takes no time to set up a workstation or server.
