Wow, good price. I've never found deals like that yet.
But understand that the original argument I presented was that replacing
PCs with workstations was hard because PCs are cheap power.
The machines you list are all fine machines, but you can get a lot more
PC power now, and its also quite cheap.
The average joe doesn't know where to look for these, and there aren't
enough to go around.
Consider that you want to wean a group of 500 users off of PCs.
Let's say they all have Athlon systems like mine. Fairly fast, but they
want something faster, or whatever.
Where am I going to find 500 UNIX workstations that will meet
the criteria:
* they will be faster at their desktop apps
* they can run the applications they need
* the cost will be in line with a decent PC upgrade
To avoid an applications issue, assume they currently run Linux.
I don't think you can currently get a workstation solution installed
that won't cost a lot more than PCs of the same power. You can't eBay
for that many machines. FOr that matter, getting 20 might be hard.
If you buy from a used vendor, most of them are going to be on the high
side of eBay sales.
That's what I mean when I say that a workstation to replace a PC
*desktop* is a harder sell than a server.
