A company where my dad worked did batch processing.  I got him to get
database dumps (from their minicomputer's flatfile databases) and use
access and excel for adhoc stuff.  When they went to a SQL server for
their main stuff, he still would dump all the data to an Access file for
use in ad hoc queries.

One could always do it on ones own.  I believe I have some dead tree
articles at home from old magazines instructing one on constructing and
programing their own 68000/68008 computers.  I'm not sure I have the
articles on building a time sharing system on these chips though.
