  for what it's worth I've fetched the drive I used (did come out of a
  scrap heap and was most likely used in a PC before):
    Toshiba XM-3401B (2x, Caddy, Made in 1993)
  No jumpers set except ID#, Parity and Termination.

  Booting was as simple as Dave mentioned.
