[rescue] SS Classic trouble

I have a SS classic that I want to put an OS on.

I'm trying to boot from a CD. I'm using mostly known good CDs, and a
known good CD-ROM (plextor in a 411 case).

When I try to boot Solaris 8, I get the message:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

When I try to boot NetBSD or Solaris 2.5.1 (solaris 2.5.1 is the only CD
set not known to be good), I get the messages:
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Can't open boot device.

Can anyone explains what this means? For all CDs, I've tried boot
cdrom, and something along the lines of boot /sbus/esp/sd at 6,0 vmunix,
and either way I get the same message.
