Ah, that's more recently than I last tried to do anything major with
Gnome.

Maybe they finally fixed it.  Last time I tried to do a clean Gnome
install from source on a machine that didn't already have it, I found
that libgnome depended on libfoo which depended on libbar which depended
on libgnome ....  I no longer remember the relevant values of foo and
bar though.  It was at least two years ago, because I remember it was
while I still had a job.
