That's a matter of opinion.  I use the vendor's tools whenever possible,
unless there's some stupid piece of third-party software that relies on
non-POSIX behavior present in the GNU tools.

Packages and snapshops are available for people that don't want to tune
the distribution specifically for their hardware.

Been there, checked it out, wasn't impressed.  I like Slackware a lot
better.

They might be, now.  I last checked into this possibility about August
