You're pretty much right.  The default gcc target is sparcv7 which
is what the sun4c machines are.  And right now the distributions
are compiling for sparcv7 for compatibility.  For ultrasparcs it's
generally not true, at least for the BSDs, cause it tends to be a
separate port.

They have started making mechanisms in shared libraries to pull
in optimized libraries for applications where it will make a
difference...   to combat this effect AND maintain sun4c compatibility.
