It wouldn't be the first time this has happened.  Typically some vendor
wants to contribute back their own in-house optimizations for [usually
but not always] their platform, but wants to do so in a non-GPL'd
manner.

GCC being GPL'd and all, this tends not to fly.  But most of the time it
ends up getting worked out in the end.

What tends to be more of a barrier is when $VENDOR's *engineers* want to
contribute back their code, but $VENDOR's legal department says "Under
the GPL?  Over our dead bodies."

(At which point the engineers have often been heard to mutter, "That can
be arranged.")
