Well, I haven't used BRL-CAD at all, so it is hard to say what exactly
the effect is here.  I'm guessing that it would just forbid yourfrom
creating any surface with a dimension of zero, but if you made
everything 1 unit in thickness you could fake it out to do 2Dish work.
Why you would want that trouble is another question.  BRL-CAD is clearly
an MCAD package, so why try to make it do something else?  

On a side note, Autocad's base program is still only that hybrid 2D
isn't it?  The one where you can only work on a plane, but you can have
multiple planes and orient them how you want?  I'm probably remebering
wrong.
