I have no FP intensive tasks.

Int is what I need and I would like to have at lest the same int power
as my Alpha has. I don't have a R10k machine to compare. I have only seen
benchmarks. The 500 MHz Alpha EV56 is rated at 15 SPECint95, a 360 MHz
PPC603e is at 14 SPECint95 and a 200 MHz R10k is at 10 SPECint95 (Octane,
the Indigo2 R10k is at 9 SPECint95). So a 200 MHz Octane (and that is
what you can get cheap now) would be a step backwards. A 250 MHz R10k
Octane, the fastest R10k Octanes I have seen, are still below the
watermark.

Why?
There is a version of this machine with IBM POWER CPUs, but PPC604e is
all I have.

Well. There is nothing IBM or Motorola beside the CPUs in this box.
It was comletely designed and build by Bull. I have the impression the
Bull engineers at Bull Italia knew how to do plumbing with big pipes.

Yes. Therefore I didn't even think about a dual CPU Octane.
Same reason I don't consider Sun. To expensive and it is only the name
that makes it expensive.
Well. I have to admit I ePayed a Ultra5 board with unknown CPU a few
minutes ago for 51,77 EUR. Looks like a good deal to me. :-)
