RE: R8ks etc...

One thing that really surprised me is how much difference there is
between the exact same CPU on different SGI boxes due to the
architecture.

For instance, the FutureTech SGI site has the results of different
benchmarks, using an R10K/195 on Octane, o2, I2, PowerChallenge, etc.

The difference in performance between latest and greatest architecture
like Octane and the earlier architecture like I2 and PChallenge can be
up to 2 times.  

Interestingly enough, the sometimes-overlooked o2 can hold its own on
the perl benchmark and come very close on some of the others against
the Octane.

I think the kicker is memory bandwidth - older systems like I2 don't
have it.  I don't think there is an R8K module for Octane or o2, is
there?
