Urban legend, IIRC.

The distributed folding people are Canada-based, and are associated with
the Mount Sinai hospital.  it is my understanding that the copyrights
were registered to prevent abuse by other parties.

Since the copyrights were handed over to the Mount Sinai hospital, that
basically makes it *extremely* difficult to privatize the findings. 
Someone familiar with Candian health-care law could shed more light, but
it's a socialist system up there, very different than in the US.
