[rescue] indigo 2 problem

I recently rescued an SGI Indigo 2 from eBay.

It had a version 5 IRIX on it, and I had a complete version 6 install 
set of CD's.  When I did a maintenance upgrade, the CD drive disappeared 
from the desktop.  The hardware still sees it, but IRIX does not.

I am not a Unix guru - just started learning.  Does anyone have any 
ideas about what might have happened?
