IMO: It wouldn't be worth the time and effort.  It might work, but will you be able to find apps for it?  How long will it take?  Will you be able to use the hardware?  

Irix is, IMO, the only OS suitable for SGI/MIPS equipment if you want to use tha hardware and run needed apps.  Now if it was one of those Intel abomonations, then Linux would probably be a good choice.

However, if you're looking for an excersise in "I wonder what would happen", go for it.  It might also be a good way to practive self-flagellation.
