Silly question, but did you have /usr/openwin/bin in your path? IIRC, it is
not in the default PATH, unless you logged in from the console and started
OpenWindows.

FYI, assuming you get past the xauth issue and have problems starting the
server, make sure that Xvnc is setgid root.
