Firmware prompt on a Mac? What's that? ;-)
Did you check the System Profiler to see if the FW and USB were
showing up as busses on the Mac? When I was reading various Mac
boards to decide what I was going to buy, there were a number of
posts on the power requirements of various FW/FW-USB combo cards.
(xlr8yourmac.com is a good resource).
I would try cleaning the connectors in the slot. If that doesn't
work, I'd try it in a different machine to see if the card is
defective. Maybe a more modern Mac? Or, if you have a Windoze
2K/XP[1] box available, you should be able to plug it into that
and it should "just work".
[1] Win98 doesn't support USB, but 98SE does. I can't recall if
98SE supports FW w/out manufacturer drivers or not.
