Well, the saga continues...
Turns out that the default installation of PostgreSQL is not really
tuned well. The defaults in the config file are those that will let
it use less than 2MB RAM - but I have a lot more.
Playing with the config lets me cut the typical operation by 20%,
going from 10 seconds to less than 8.
Remember folks, this is an SM51 with a slow disk, so that is quite an
improvement.
