I zapped the early part of this thread, so please forgive me if this was
mentioned, but I think the old Hewlett Packard 1000 series not only had
access to the microcode, but access to the internal buses allowing
hardware extensions.  Of course it my just be that you could add
functions implemented in the microcode rather than truly changing it.
