Well, you can certainly run Linux.  It is less than ideal to run only
Linux, but it should be enough to get the machine up and running from
what I hear.

BTW, wouldn't the linux kernel count as documentation of the hardware?

I don't know anything about finding DASD.   All I know is that there are
instructions for running linux on the raw hardware out there.
