I have a U1 with dead onboard ethernet also.. now, BOTH ports were dead on
mine..  its been too long since it happened to remember the error messages,
but I dont think it was obvious.

(Are two machines a trend??)

I had to put a hme sbus card into it..

that said, if the MII port works.. they are avaialble on eBay.. just do a
search for mii  canary makes them.. others as well. there are also some
thnks called mii that are not.. be sure yo can see a photo.
