I took your advice and now have had a LaserJet 5M on my desk for the last
week.  The toner cartridge finally arrived today.  I guess I didn't know
exactly what I'd been missing by not having a real printer on the network,
but thiw certainly kicks ass.  I can't wait until I get enough cash
together to afford a buttload more memory and a duplexer.

Surprisingly enough, it's almost quieter than the 6L, or at least the
mechanical noise is at a frequency where I can more easily ignore it.

Thanks a lot--I never knew that used 4M+ and 5M printers had gotten so
affordable.  The result may not appeal to the do-it-yourselfer in me, but
is far more polished than anything I could've rigged up.
