Some drives can sustain 5mbyte/second.  Some can sustain a lot more than 
that, but 5mbyte/second seems common.  That is enough for DVD playback 
(which is about 2.7mbyte/sec).  In fact, traditionally, DVDs were mastered
to DLT.
