Yes, in the transition period between the advent of cartridge firearms (1800s)
and the widespread use of smokeless powders (early 1900s) there was a period 
where cartridges were loaded with black powder.  (i.e. most civil war to pre- 
WW1 cartridges, give or take a few...)
