In American English, the pronunciation is open, as we have
such a mix of both words and people.  Some things are not
pronounced the same depending on where the person learned
to speak.  A good example is root.  There's two ways the
word is pronounced in the US (and Canada).

I always said Lynn-ucks, even before I heard anyone else
say the word.

to pronounce it Throat-Warbler Mangrove, he's free to do that.
